<p>This is a time for reflection, introspection and yes a little bit of self analysis.</p>
<p>I highly recommend you write it in your journal so you have your key distinctions, insights and ideas for years to come. Of course you know to be creative, outrageous and &#8216;colour outside the lines&#8217;!!!</p>
<p>Once you&#8217;ve sat on the proverbial couch and reflected on the past, it&#8217;s then time to look to the future that awaits you&#8230; 2009.</p>
<p><strong>2009</strong> is the opportunity of a lifetime with chaos reigning everywhere, creating boundless opportunities out of thin air for all of us to leverage - exponentially. In big bites or tiny morsels, depending on your appetite for growth and expansion.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s an example for you: Someone (we&#8217;ll call him Frank, not his real name) created a YouTube video about how he goes about meditating and getting inspired to find new business opportunities&#8230;</p>
<p>He sells a CONSUMER PRODUCT which has nothing to do with his business process to come up with new product ideas.</p>
<p>It confuses the issue - as I explained at the encore presentation of the <a href="http://www.EmpowernetBusinessMastery.com.au/bootcampencore">Exponential Internet and Business Building Bootcamp</a>, if it doesn&#8217;t compress your <strong>Pathways To Profit</strong>™ don&#8217;t use it - it will only LENGTHEN your sales cycle.</p>
<p>Of course Frank has some friends that liked the video - that&#8217;s not the point. ONLY ONE PERSON&#8217;S OPINION MATTERS&#8230;</p>
<p>&#8220;Mr or Mrs Market&#8221;</p>
<p>That is YOUR PROSPECT OR CLIENT.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t say this often enough - you don&#8217;t get a second chance to make a first impression. Use it wisely.</p>

<p>How you come up with product ideas, inspiration and vision is of NO CONCERN to the buyer - I couldn&#8217;t care less when I go to buy a consumable, I want the product and its benefits. I can&#8217;t go into the details of Frank&#8217;s products because this is NOT about Frank and criticising him in public - it&#8217;s about you learning from his marketing mistake and avoiding it.</p>

<p>Of course there is a nuance that IF the story ADDS to the cachet, intrigue and personality of the product, you WANT to include it, but there is a fine line that you don&#8217;t want to cross.</p>
<p>Ask yourself the following questions:</p>
<ul>
<li>&#8220;Why would anyone care about this?&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;How does this ADD to the sales process?&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;How does this REDUCE the objections to purchase?&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;How does this INCREASE the chance of them buying?&#8221;</li>
<li>&#8220;How does this fit into the positioning and brand I&#8217;ve created?&#8221;</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#8217;s all about interpretation and perception - the best sounding board is to ask someone who will &#8216;tell you the truth - not what you want to hear, but what you need to hear&#8230;&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sounds obvious, but guess what? There&#8217;s an Australian supplier who can deliver that and yet he&#8217;s &#8217;struggling&#8217; to get new clients&#8230; Sound familiar?</p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t matter what you have to offer - if no one knows about it - no one will buy.</p>
<p>Even if its a total &#8216;no brainer&#8217;&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>Imagine saving 10% to 25% on your fuel for a one-time $600 investment PLUS reduce pollution by up to 70% - wouldn&#8217;t you buy that in a heart beat?</strong></p>
<p>What about taxi drivers and hire cars? Can you imagine how quickly they would get a payback?!?!</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the point - UNLESS I tell you where you can buy this product, you can&#8217;t even consider buying it.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the point.</p>
<p>Bill&#8217;s frustrated because he&#8217;s got the solution that everyone needs but not enough people are buying - <strong>BECAUSE they don&#8217;t know he exists</strong>&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>They also don&#8217;t know how quickly they can get their payback</strong> - if you KNEW you&#8217;d make your money back in 3,000 or 5,000 Kms or 8, 12 or 16 weeks you&#8217;d do it right now wouldn&#8217;t you?</p>
<p>Especially when you know the price of petrol is only going to go back up!</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the lesson for today - (1) People need to know you exist, (2) they need to know WHY they should BUY from you and (3) understand the BENEFITS which in this case is Return On Investment (ROI).</p>
<p>The better you articulate that, the more people will BUY from you.</p>

<p>That is part of what you need to articulate as a BENEFIT so people WANT to make the one-time payment for on-going fuel savings&#8230;</p>
<p>If you are sitting there with even a small DESIRE TO BUY THIS - you&#8217;ve proven the point I want to make. It really doesn&#8217;t take much to start MOVING people in the direction you want.</p>
<p>The sooner people buy, the sooner they save money.</p>
<p>If you told people that on average, every day they wait costs then $76 cents or every week costs them $3.48 cents, that puts it in perspective. That&#8217;s a free coffee every week or every second day - depending on mileage&#8230;</p>
<p>Then there is the whole &#8216;GREEN&#8217; approach, but that confuses the issue - costs savings are NOT synonymous with saving the planet. Make sure you have only ONE primary message so people are triggered to buy to satisfy that NEED.</p>
<p>Too many people try to give ALL the benefits and therefore confuse the issue and that delays or prevents the sale from happening&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In a recent telemarketing campaign, we came across a string of &#8216;objections&#8217; with &#8216;tell tale&#8217; signs that are so BLATANT that we instructed the telemarketing agents to get OFF the phone as quickly as possible - because those people are VICTIMS and MARTYRS and can&#8217;t be helped.</p>

<p>I need to put these objections in contrast:</p>
<p>If those SAME people  who don&#8217;t have the time were called by their daughter&#8217;s school advising them that she hurt her ankle during gym class and they think it&#8217;s bad enough to warrant an X-Ray to confirm a strain and not a broken bone - do you reckon those people would complete their day at the office or drop everything and get her to the hospital right away?</p>
<p>If those SAME people, on their way home from the hospital hit a pot hole and got a flat tyre, do you think they would leave the car on the side of the road until they could afford to pay for the repairs?</p>
<p>Interesting isn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>They would FIND the time and FIND the money&#8230;</p>
<p>But when it comes to Business Growth they jump to a REASON before they consider the RESULT&#8230;</p>
<p>There are a lot of people struggling out there and one of the ways to succeed in business DURING A RECESSION is to identify the VICTIMS and MARTYRS and stay as far away from them as possible.</p>
<p>Otherwise they will suck every once of energy, enthusiasm and profit out of your business - like vampires.</p>
<p>That being said, once you&#8217;ve gotten rid of the profit vampires, the challenge is to identify those OTHER people who are struggling and need a helping hand.</p>
<p><strong>They are the ones who WANT help, but don&#8217;t know how to get started.</strong></p>
<p>They are the ones who are SCARED, but still have faith in themselves - they have NOT given up.</p>
<p>They still have FAITH and BELIEF in their abilities to make things happen.</p>
<p>BUT they&#8217;ve hit hard times and need a boost, a helping hand.</p>

<p><em>For example, when a client met with me a few days ago for an engagement ring, I mentioned that after the wedding rings were done, his wife will expect to get an eternity ring, which is given on either the first wedding anniversary, or when their first child is born, which ever happens to come first… </em></p>

<p><em>My client is not particularly traditional, and as such had his own gift in mind. We decided on a coloured diamond and gemstone band for her other hand. After the wedding bands this is a great up-sell, and something I will keep doing!</em></p>

<li><em>What have we been asked in the past that we didn’t or couldn’t do, but could do now to impress and surprise them?</em></li>
<li><em>What would really help our clients?</em></li>
<li><em>What are they struggling with that we can assist them with?</em></li>
<li><em>What </em>was the last time we said ‘no’ to a client? How could we say ‘yes’ instead?</li>
</ul>
<p>When you come up with one or two ideas, DO THEM and see what happens!</p>
<p>I guarantee you your competitor isn’t doing it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today&#8217;s post is about what separates Champions from Challengers, Challengers from Competitors, Competitors from Participants and finally Participants from Spectators.</p>
<p>I am currently competing at the World Master&#8217;s Squash Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand and chronicling my exploits on my <a href="http://www.MarcDussault.com/blog">Personal Mastery Blog</a>.</p>
<p>Yesterday&#8217;s post discussed the <a href="http://www.marcdussault.com/blog/2008/10/even-superman-has-kryptonite/">&#8216;Kryptonite&#8217; phenomenon</a> in sufficient detail that I won&#8217;t repeat it here, but there is one additional distinction that I didn&#8217;t quite articulate sufficiently that has more to do with business than squash so I will post it here.</p>
<p><strong>You have to be MUCH better to beat a lesser competitor when that competitor is a &#8217;scrappy&#8217; hacker style player</strong>. Let me be crystal clear with the squash analogy first - if an unorthodox player wins, he wins.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s how the game is played. <strong>All points count. </strong>Elegant masterful winners as well as off-the-racquet-frame spinning shots that die 1&#8243; above the tin. If you&#8217;ve played competitive squash, you know what I&#8217;m talking about. The funny grip, the two-foot stance facing the front wall, the inside-out boasts from the weirdest angles&#8230;</p>
<p>In business it&#8217;s exactly the same - the &#8217;scrappy&#8217; competitor may win a client today, tomorrow and the next day after that, but if you stay the course and improve, you WILL get to the point where you can dictate terms and conditions and set the rules for you to win.</p>
<p>In academic circles, it&#8217;s called the &#8216;terminal degree&#8217; - no, not the degree that kills you (even though it might feel that way!), but the LAST DEGREE you end up with.</p>
<p>There is a similar, but quite different concept in corporate development called the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle"><strong>Peter Principle</strong></a> which is not quite where I&#8217;m headed with today&#8217;s distinction.</p>
<p><strong>THE GOOD NEWS:</strong> Every competitor has a point where his/her &#8217;scrappy&#8217; skills won&#8217;t take them any further. Most people don&#8217;t realise this is the case, but if YOU DO, you can use that and leverage it to YOUR ADVANTAGE.</p>
<p><strong>THE BAD NEWS:</strong> You have to be a LOT better to overcome the &#8217;scrappiness&#8217;. You can&#8217;t just be a little better, you have to be a LOT better.</p>
<p>Case in point - I played a match today that I lost BECAUSE I couldn&#8217;t put enough pressure to PROHIBIT my opponent from using his unorthodox shots. I was the BETTER PLAYER TECHNICALLY - but he had a weapon that I couldn&#8217;t neutralise.</p>
<p><em><strong>I wasn&#8217;t better enough. </strong></em>Even though that is poor grammar, I&#8217;m sure you understand.</p>
<p>With your sales, marketing and product/service delivery, you have to be MUCH BETTER to become the DOMINANT PLAYER in your &#8217;space&#8217; - whatever that may be.</p>
<p>The more specific you are about your niche, the easier it is for you to develop the necessary skills to be &#8216;better enough&#8217;&#8230;</p>
<p>There you go - another distinction that if you think about it and APPLY IT can have a dramatic influence on your results as you continue to push&#8230;</p>

<p>I know it sounds silly, but I stopped using a supplier recently BECAUSE he wouldn&#8217;t take the 60 seconds to update me - that meant he lost about $15,000 of work PLUS I will NEVER refer anyone to him or his company.</p>

<p>I know this stuff is simple and straightforward - guys like me and Sam aren&#8217;t that smart - we need it to be simple and easy!</p>
